Alternative to Google Chrome?
There have been a few concerns over Google’s new browser with regards to user ‘privacy’. One particular problem is that they assign a unique id on installation and all subsequent actions can be tracked against this id. Microsoft got a lot of flak for a similar feature in Media Player so I’m [not] suprised there’s not been more made of this ‘feature’ in Chrome. However, as usual, people seem to think Google can do no wrong…
One thing you can do is use SRWare‘s Iron browser which seems to have all the good bits of Chrome and none of the bad – which can only be a good thing
The codebase is the same as Chrome coming from the open source project – Chromium – and so may be the 1st of many possible projects.
On another subject, I was surprised that the drop of Chromium used in Iron supports the Silvernet 2.0 Beta 2 runtime. A good test site is Bubblemark where there are many different flavours of a bouncing ball web based ‘application’. This is certainly a good sign for Microsoft’s client side runtime although I doubt the runtime is supported on anything other than Windows at present
